What is Pokemon All About?

Pokeman popularity began back in 1996 when Nintendo marketing made it one of their best selling games for the Game Boy. But that’s not where Pokemon origins lay. So what is Pokemon really all about?

Pokemon began in Japan as a group of unique Pocket Monsters that battled each other at the command of their trainer. It’s a fantastic adventure the world of Pokemon where kids become trainers and the master of the Pokemon.

The Pokemon were creatures that had special abilities. The Pokemon battles do not allow any dirty tricks and the follow a rigid set of rules. Pokemon battles never ever end with death of a Pokemon. The battle is a success when the creatures faint. They are then rushed to Pokemon Center for recovery where they are placed in a Poke Ball. The game is one of cooperation and team spirit.

It’s a game that requires skill and challenges the trainer to be a thinker. It’s fun but educational. It’s addictive but healthy. It’s a phenomenon. It’s an incredible adventure that has heroes travel the world discovering amazing things.

So who are the characters? Ash is an ambitious 10 year old with big dreams to become a Pokemon master because of his love for his pokemon. In the first episode he is late to meet Professor Oak where he would meet his first pokemon. When he arrives he finds Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur are taken so he is given Pikachu who is rather unusual.

Pikachu has an electrifying personality and is the most loved pokemon of all. Misty is appears to be a brat but is actually a very good girl nice to all but Ash. Brock is the older testosterone male of the traveling group of 3, and has a rather large ego. Tracey is the newest character and she love learning about the Pokemon.

The villains include Gary who is the self centered opponent of Ash. Jesse and James two kids stuck in pre teen bodies. Meowth is a little like Pikachu and can actually speak English.

The original term for was not Pokemon but rather Poketto Monstaa but then it was shortened by the Japenese. Tarjiri a Japenese game designer had the original brainchild for Pokeman which was based on his childhood memories. It took 6 years for the development of the game but once it was released history was made.

The Nintendo may have brought Pokemon to the forefront of the gaming world but the animated Pokeman television series that Warner Brothers aired in 1998 really set the stage for it’s overall popularity. It immediately captured the attention of children around North America.

The trading cards were then released in English and the rest is a phenomenon that still carries own today. Then just as a bit of a lull occurred Warner Brother released “Pokemon The First Movie” which created a resurge in interest. It was then followed in 1999 by “Pokemon Mewtwo Strikes Back,” 2000 saw “Pokemon The Movie.” And finally 2001 saw “Pokemon 3 The Movie.”

Pokemon Nintendo interactive video games saw 20 million Pokemon video games for the Game Boy and Nintendo 64 sold in just 24 months. In fact in 2000 Pokemon games were in the top 10 selling video games. By early 2000 74 million Pokemon games had been sold world wide.

The popularity doesn’t end with Pokemon movies and video games. There are pokemon trading cards, pokemon toys, and all kinds of pokemon collectibles.

Today it still hold popularity on an international market. That’s because it appeals to children of all ages and from all cultures. It has global entertainment value and it’s apparent it will be around for years to come.
