Employers feel the need for a background check for several reasons. According to Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, employers conduct a background check because of the following: 1) Increase in the number of negligent hiring lawsuits filed; 2) Current events, like child abuse and kidnappings, the September 11 events, and other corporate scandals that has affected the business world; 3) Rampancy of inflated or false information presented by aspiring applicants and long-term employees alike; 4) Existence of federal and state laws requiring background checks; and 5) The cheap availability of personal records in this Information Age.
