Wine Bottle Holder

By: Joanne Dorin

A wine bottle holder is more than just a place to store a bottle of wine before it is served, it's an aesthetic object that adds to the enjoyment of your gathering. Whether it's a romantic dinner for two or a family get together, a unique wine bottle holder can add that special something to your table setting.

Beyond aesthetics and keeping wine nearby, the practical reason that people use wine bottle holders is to keep the cork wet while having the bottle near. Instead of placing the bottle upright on the table, placing a wine bottle in a wine bottle holder keeps the cork soft and less likely to crumble into the wine when it is removed.

Of course there are traditional wine bottle holders, and some flairs on the traditional designs as well, but let's talk about something a little more unique. Recently, I went on a trip to Central America and was delighted by the various, extremely unique, wine bottle holders that I found at the markets I visited.

In Mexico I found a beautiful hardwood balancing wine bottle holder. The wine bottle holder is basically just a piece of elegantly curved wood with a hole that the neck of a wine bottle fits into. It's called a balancing wine bottle holder because while the bottle holder can rock back and forth, when left undisturbed, it rests at just the right angle to keep the wine tilted toward the neck, as with traditional wine bottle holders.

The wood of this beautiful wine bottle holder comes from indigenous hardwoods of different varieties. I choose a particularly dark wood wine bottle holder to match the décor of my dining room. There were several other types of wood from which to choose, as well as wine bottle holders made form other materials.

There was also a few different balancing wine bottle holders made from pewter. These were mostly smaller wine bottle holders shaped something like a shoe horn. These pewter wine bottle holders are simple, yet extremely elegant.

In addition to the plain pewter wine bottle holders, there were also pewter wine bottle holders that had pewter decorations, such as starts and other patterns. There were even pewter wine bottle holders with quaint sea themed pewter decoration.

In Costa Rica I found some lovely wooden balancing wine bottle holders. So many shapes to choose from, I finally decided to opt for a crab shaped wooden wine bottle holder. These wooden wine bottle holders look absolutely stunning, as though real magic is involved in the levitating wine bottle act.

They had wooden wine bottle holders shaped like canoes, simple paddles, fish and so many more shapes, I just had to pick up some additional wine bottle holders for friends and family at home. Of course they were equally impressed with the unique way to display wine bottles.

So take a break from the traditional wine bottle holder and try something a little more one of a kind, like these totally different balancing wine bottle holders.
